After a little while, you just stop believing the announcements. So, when the speaker makes the little “ding” noise, you almost shut it out. After the fifth time of being told we would be departing Newark airport shortly, only to have our hearts crushed, I was more than a little frustrated. We were now an hour late starting our flight and “only” 24th in line for departure. You could feel the frustration building on the plane. Many of these people had been given the same runaround (like me) at the airport in Boston, where we were also herded onto a plane with great haste only to sit on the runway for an hour.
By the time we finally got airborne last night, I needed a new attitude and a fresh perspective. I was excited about getting home to my wife and kids but it seemed like the next two hours would be forever. So, I pulled out my i-Pod, punched up my “worship” playlist, and retrieved my Bible from back pack. I spent the next two hours alternating between Isaiah, worship and what was outside my window. There is something serene about traveling at night. Between the lights of earth and the lights of heaven, there comes this awareness that God is truly very, very big. I was struck by this thought: we were 34,000 feet in the air and still nowhere near the closest star. I was in awe.
This “reminder” of who I am and Who I serve settled into my mind. Rather than feeling insignificant, it caused me to feel more loved than just an hour before. The “junk” that had stressed me so much just minutes before now paled in comparison. It was as if God’s Spirit was saying to me, “I’ve got this. Now focus on what matters.” I know. I’ve heard it before. If anyone should know this, it is me. But the reminder that came at high altitudes last night was worth the wait. Today, I’m more focused on the task and more ready to run the race. Thank you, Continental, for getting me there.
“You will keep in perfect peace him whose mind is steadfast, because he trusts in you” Isaiah 26:3 NIV
REMINDER: Next Saturday, RCC has booked a theater at Cool Springs for a showing of “Fireproof.” You need to see this movie. So do your kids. It’s a great lesson on love, forgiveness, commitment and marriage. Tickets are heavily discounted (and if it’s not enough, you can go for free. RCC will pick up the tab). So, invite you friends and put it on your calendar. You and I both know plenty of marriages that could use this vivid illustration of God’s love and what commitment is all about. The fun begins at 6:30 on October 11th. We’ll see you and your friends there. (Tickets are limited so make your reservations with the church office ASAP).
